DJ Slugo Color The World

DJ Slugo: Color the World is a vibrant, culturally rooted coloring book created by DJ Slugo (Thomas Kendricks) in collaboration with visual artist Kenlo Key of Jones Corner Store. The book celebrates the legacy of Ghetto House music and the cultural movement born on Chicago’s South Side, inspiring dancers, DJs, and artists around the world.

Designed as both an educational and creative tool, Color the World introduces young people to the life and journey of DJ Slugo, from his upbringing in the Robert Taylor Homes to his global impact as a DJ and producer. Through interactive coloring pages, storytelling, and music-based activities, the book invites youth and families to explore the roots of Chicago’s sound while engaging in creativity, literacy, and self-expression.

Creative Netwerk proudly supports this project as part of its ongoing commitment to uplifting Chicago’s music and dance culture through arts education, literacy, and community-based programming. The project reflects Creative Netwerk’s broader mission to connect literacy, music, and movement through culturally grounded arts education.

In partnership with Jones Corner Store and ChicagoFootworkDotCom, the book serves as a bridge between generations, honoring the pioneers of Ghetto House, Juke, and Footwork while inspiring the next wave of artists. The project also includes collaboration with the Michael Jordan Boys & Girls Club and Notes for Notes Chicago Studio, where DJ Slugo worked directly with youth artists Brookie Cookie, Hannah Banana, and Baby Virgo to create the track “Grown.” The track was mixed and mastered by TJ Carpenter at Notes for Notes Chicago Studio. This collaboration creates a platform for young creatives to contribute directly to the music and culture represented in the book.

To deepen the connection between music and learning, the book includes QR-enabled access to original tracks and mixes, allowing participants to listen, create, and move as they engage with the material. Through this integrated approach, Color the World becomes more than a coloring book; it is a living cultural resource that celebrates Chicago’s legacy and empowers youth through creativity, education, and community.
